MEETING 9 - 15 MARCH 2015

This week we would ask members to:

  • Read the results of the Club Visioning project which Ian has placed on an ‘Excell’ spreadsheet for us which will be promulgated again today by email. Some of us need to vote and this has been subject of a separate email.
  • Prepare for the discussion on these results on 19 March 2015 via zoom.

DreamCricket Project.

DreamCricket is a program for children with a disability to build their confidence, self-esteem and mobility skills through participation in a fun and engaging program of modified cricket activities. The Rotary E-Club of Brindabella adopted DreamCricket as one of its major projects in 2013 and has run DreamCricket Gala days in Canberra in 2012 and 2014 in conjunction with Dream Cricket International, its partners and CricketACT. Over 120 students from 10 schools in the ACT and Queanbeyan attended the 2014 Gala Day at Kingston Oval where they enjoyed 10 different activities in rotation, culminating in an exciting “run-out” game to finish. During the previous week, clinics were held at the participating schools to familiarise the students, teachers and carers with the program. Great support was received from 6 Canberra Rotary Clubs who provided members to assist the children, a barbecue lunch and donated kits of equipment to attending schools so that the program could be continued at the school. Qualified and experienced coaches were provided by Cricket ACT led by the DreamCricket Co-ordinator Rick McCarthy OAM.

This year’s program will be held on April 9 at Kingston Oval and it is hoped that it will attract an even wider level of interest. Funding to run the day is being provided from the proceeds of the Antiques and Collectibles Fair at the Albert Hall on March 21/22. Our Club is providing all the assistance needed to run this event over this weekend and has responded marvellously.

DreamCricket is expanding rapidly into all States and demonstration events have been held in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Under a new Strategic Plan developed last weekend, steps are being taken to have the program recognised as an official Australian Rotary Program. A major fundraising program is also being commenced.

Autumn Antique and Collectables Fair in the Albert Hall, Canberra – 20-22 March 2015

The Rotary Club of Canberra City, a community service organisation, supports a variety of charitable projects with practical and financial help through major fund-raising activities.  This includes the ACT Springtime and Autumn Antiques and Collectables Fairs in the Albert Hall.   Proceeds are used to help those less fortunate in the local Canberra area.

There is no better way to welcome autumn to the national capital than relaxing and browsing through the high quality, collectables and objects d’art offered for sale at the annual Autumn Antique and Collectables Fair presented by the Rotary Club of Canberra City.

Surrounded by magnificent trees and just a stone’s throw from Lake Burley Griffin, the heritage-listed Albert Hall makes the perfect backdrop for the 23 antique dealers from around Australia to display their wares.  The fairs always feature an excellent blend of high quality, genuine, affordable antiques, old world nostalgia and wonderful collections for sale.

Proceeds from the Autumn Antique Fair, to be held from the 20-22 March always stay in the Canberra region.  The proceeds of the autumn fair will enable DreamCricket clinics to be held in schools in Canberra and Queanbeyan, including a $500.00 DreamCricket Kit for participating schools as part of the experience, culminating in a DreamCricket Day on a significant local oval involving all participating schools within the area.

In the supper room, a mouth-watering selection of home-made cakes, biscuits and slices are available for morning and afternoon tea and light luncheons are also available.

Tell your friends and spread the word about the Autumn Antiques and Collectables Fairs to commence the weekend of 20 to 22 March 2014.  Opening night is Friday evening 20st March from 6 pm to 9 pm.  The Fair continues on Saturday March 21 from 10.00am to 5.30pm & Sunday March 22 from 10.00am to 4.00pm.  Entry to the Fair is $7 ($5 concession).   Accompanied children 14-years and under are free.  There is wheelchair access to Albert Hall.
